J.P. Woolman letters, 1884.

This collection contains eight one-page letters written to J.P. Woolman in 1884. These letters are all from Missoula and are business letters concerning financial business, and many include tax receipts. These letters appeal to Woolman as the Montana Territorial Auditor to record, verify, and compensate various accounts in Missoula. The companies writing to Woolman may have in the process of being audited by him. Included are letters from the Missoula County treasurer, the county clerk of Missoula County, and Worden & Co.

Joseph P. Woolman was born the son of James and Mary Ann Woolman in Woodstown, Salem County, N.J., on 5 Feb. 1841. His ancestors came to America in 1678. His father James was a farmer, a leather manufacturer, and a Quaker. J.P. Woolman, born the fourth child in the family, worked on his father's farm until he was nineteen.
